Esistono ad oggi diverse piattaforme che consentono la creazione e gestione di mondi virtuali on-line. Molte di queste sono ancora in una fase iniziale, ma nei prossimi due anni, assisteremo ad un progressivo consolidamento di queste piattaforme. Ad oggi, la piattaforma più avanzata per la gestione di mondi virtuali on-line è sicuramente Second Life, realizzata da Linden Lab, che per la diffusione, numero di utenti e possibilità di sviluppo, è la piattaforma maggiormente consolidata.
Le potenzialità ed i nuovi orizzonti offerti dai mondi virtuali on-line sono ormai un dato di fatto. Il loro sviluppo nei diversi paesi è relativo allo sviluppo tecnologico in genere. In particolare gli elementi influenzanti sono l'ampiezza di banda e conseguente velocità di connessione degli utenti nei diversi paesi e la potenza dei computer.
Ad oggi le piattaforme esistenti per realizzare mondi virtuali sono fondamentalmente di due tipi:

Le piattaforme aperte, che permettono l'integrazione con sistemi esistenti e/o la realizzazione di mondi virtuali custom, all'interno di un mondo virtuale più ampio, come ad esempio Second Life.

Le piattaforme chiuse, che permettono la realizzazione di mondi virtuali limitati, con accesso riservato ai propri utenti e, per ora, senza inter-comunicazione con altri mondi virtuali.
E' evidente che le piattaforme destinate a svilupparsi maggiormente sono quelle aperte, che come nel caso di Second Life di Linden Lab.

Linden Lab picks online marketing executive as CEO
Linden Lab said on Tuesday it has selected online marketing executive Mark Kingdon as its new chief executive, replacing founder Philip Rosedale.
Kingdon is CEO of digital marketing agency Organic Inc and a former senior partner at PricewaterhouseCoopers. As of May 15, he will take control of day-to-day management and operations from Rosedale, who will become Linden Lab chairman and work on product development and strategy.
New Linden CEO could be named within weeks
Virtual world Second Life has the potential to become mainstream once computers and connections catch up with the aspirations of its creators, its founder told Reuters in an interview on Monday.
